'Billy Elliot' gives 11-year-old boys who can dance ballet a great role to play

The title character of “Billy Elliot the Musical” is an 11-year-old boy living in northern England, the son and brother of striking coal miners, who discovers he has a gift for ballet.

The role has a couple of basic requirements. The performer needs to look like an 11-year-old boy. He also needs to be an excellent ballet dancer, since the plot turns on the fact that his teacher believes he has the talent to successfully audition for the Royal Ballet School in London, even though his family is scornful of that ambition.

Billy Elliot the Musical is one of the greatest stories of struggle and fulfillment known to mankind. The added plus, of course, is that Sir Elton John created the music for the entire performance, from start to finish, and the book and lyrics were written by none other than Lee Hall; who also wrote the film’s screenplay.

Naturally, any project that combines out-of-this-world talent with the skills of great musicians like Elton John and Lee Hall, is absolutely going to be one incredible event! Billy Elliot the Musical is one such project that did exactly that! This musical speaks of the wonders, triumphs and tribulations of a young boy trying to find his way in the world. He is left without a mother to care for him or a father to protect him, and so, although alone, he remains ambitious and takes up a new hobbie of ballet dancing. 'Billy Elliot' actor finds joy in dancing

Drew Minard’s favorite number in “Billy Elliot” is the one where he gets to scream, punch walls and fling himself across the stage in an explosion of rage against his dream-destroying hometown.
It’s called the “Angry Dance.”
“There’s so much going on, and the whole ensemble is on the stage during the ‘Angry Dance,’ ” said the 12-year-old Drew, who plays the title role in the show. “It’s pretty nerve-wracking, but it’s really fun at the same time.” Read more here: http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20130210/ENT/302100015/-Billy-Elliot-actor-finds-joy-dancing?nclick_check=1
